Trauma bonding is a psychological survival response. It happens when someone forms a strong emotional attachment to a person or system that harms them. This bond is reinforced by cycles of abuse followed by moments of kindness, making the victim feel loyal, dependent, or even protective of the abuser.
In African American communities, trauma bonding often shows up in relationships, institutions, and cultural narratives that condition us to stay silent, grateful, or compliant—even when we’re being harmed. It’s not a weakness. It’s survival. But survival isn’t the same as healing.
🌀 About the Initiative
Breaking the Bond is a healing and empowerment program by We Can Work It Out Inc.. We help individuals and communities recognize trauma bonding, reclaim their stories, and build lives rooted in dignity, safety, and purpose.
Through healing circles, youth empowerment, entrepreneurship education, and survivor-led advocacy, we’re rewriting the narrative—together.
Healing Circles for youth, adults, and elders
“Trauma bonding (i.e., the Stockholm Syndrome) is real—and it’s in our families, our relationships, even our systems. But it’s not a weakness. It’s survival. And survival isn’t the same as healing. It’s time to break the bond.” It’s time for us to write our own stories—of healing, wholeness, and freedom.
