Yes We Can Work It Out: Community Innovation Initiative

Our Story

Building practical solutions through youth, volunteers, and community leadership.

Get Involved

At We Can Work It Out Inc., we believe communities thrive when people come together to solve real problems with creativity, compassion, and hands‑on collaboration. Our Community Innovation work brings youth, volunteers, and technical experts together to design and build solutions that strengthen families and neighborhoods. We'd love to have you on board!

Our Programs

We are actively developing the In-Wall Miniature Sewage Treatment System (IMSTS), an innovative and compact wastewater treatment unit tailored for new and existing homes, accessory dwelling units (ADUs), and small residences (Tiny Homes). This system will revolutionize how we manage wastewater in residential settings.

The IMSTS Project

We are seeking technical volunteer mentors.

A first‑of‑its‑kind, in‑wall wastewater treatment system supporting affordable housing, environmental sustainability, and youth workforce development.

  • Supports new and existing homes, ADUs & small‑lot housing
  • Creates green‑tech training opportunities
  • Community‑driven environmental innovation

Project Summary

The In‑Wall Miniature Sewage Treatment System (IMSTS) is a compact, point‑of‑use wastewater treatment unit designed to fit inside a standard wall cavity. It supports Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), tiny homes, and small‑lot housing by reducing sewer capacity barriers and providing decentralized wastewater treatment.

The IMSTS project is led by Henry Hawthorne, Vietnam‑era veteran, inventor, and founder of We Can Work It Out Inc. (WCWIO). WCWIO coordinates the community, youth training, and volunteer engagement aspects of the project.

Why This Matters

  • Supports affordable housing by reducing sewer infrastructure constraints
  • Provides environmental benefits through decentralized treatment
  • Creates green‑tech workforce pathways for youth and young adults
  • Demonstrates community‑driven innovation in Sacramento and San Joaquin County

Prototype Goals

  1. Build the first working IMSTS prototype
  2. Install the unit inside a code‑compliant ADU
  3. Conduct 30–90 days of performance testing
  4. Document treatment efficiency, flow behavior, and durability
  5. Prepare for pilot partnerships and early manufacturing planning

Technical Volunteer Roles Needed

  • Mechanical Fabrication
  • Plumbing / Fluid Systems
  • Electrical & Controls
  • Environmental / Water Treatment
  • Prototype Assembly
  • Quality Assurance & Testing
  • Field Installation

Volunteers contribute 2–10 hours per week, remotely or in person.

Youth Workforce Development

WCWIO integrates youth trainees into the project, offering hands‑on experience in:

  • Fabrication
  • Safety and tool use
  • Environmental technology
  • Teamwork and problem‑solving

We are seeking technical volunteer mentors to support the development of the first working prototype and to help guide youth trainees through hands‑on learning.

Volunteer Roles

1. Mechanical Fabrication Mentor

Supports construction of the housing, internal chambers, brackets, and structural components.

2. Plumbing / Fluid Systems Mentor

Guides wastewater flow path design, piping, seals, gaskets, and pressure testing.

3. Electrical & Controls Mentor

Assists with sensor installation, low‑voltage wiring, microcontrollers, and data logging.

4. Environmental / Water Treatment Mentor

Advises on bio‑media, aeration, filtration, and treatment performance.

5. Prototype Assembly Mentor

Helps integrate mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and environmental components into a complete unit.

6. Quality Assurance & Testing Mentor

Runs leak tests, flow tests, simulated wastewater cycles, and documents performance.

7. Field Installation Mentor

Supports installation of the prototype inside an ADU wall cavity and ensures safe, code‑aligned connections.

Time Commitment

Flexible — 2 to 10 hours per week, remote or in‑person.

Why Volunteer?

  • Support a veteran‑led, community‑rooted nonprofit
  • Mentor youth learning green‑tech and fabrication skills
  • Contribute to a first‑of‑its‑kind environmental innovation
  • Strengthen families and neighborhoods through practical solutions

Purpose of the Youth Training Component

The IMSTS project provides a hands‑on, real‑world learning environment for youth and young adults in WCWIO programs. Through this initiative, youth gain exposure to green‑tech, fabrication, environmental systems, and teamwork.

This training supports WCWIO’s mission to prepare youth to become skilled, confident contributors to their families and communities.
